Frequently Asked Questions

What is the goal and how long will the Great Expectations campaign run?

The goal of Great Expectations is to raise $1 billion dollars.  The iSchool ‘s goal is  $3 million dollars.  The campaign will conclude in December 2011.

Why is private support necessary for a public institution?

Public universities have seen a decline in their federal and state funding appropriations as other needs command a larger portion of public resources.   Private funds help us bridge the gap between a good university and a great one.

Can a donor to the iSchool request how their gift is to be used?

Absolutely. You may want your gift to live in perpetuity through an endowed fund.  The gift’s principal is invested and a percentage of the income that is generated will be designated as you wish.  Our development staff will help you with that in a confidential discussion.

Or you can contribute to the existing funds within the School or you may make an unrestricted gift to the Dean’s Fund.

How can someone make a gift to the campaign?

Gifts can be made in cash, stock, and other assets or through one’s estate.

Do campaign gifts need to be paid at once?

Donors may pledge a gift to the University of Maryland and have five years to fulfill it.

Are campaign gifts tax deductible?

Yes. Contributions to the University of Maryland are tax deductible in accordance with federal standards and we provide authorized receipts for tax recording purposes.

Can gifts be made through estates and wills?

There are many ways to use your estate to help both your loved ones and the charities that are important to you. Please contact our development staff for more information.

Are there tax breaks or income producing opportunities that result from making a gift?

There are various ways to structure a gift to provide you with an income stream during your lifetime, in addition to receiving a tax break or ways to reduce the tax burden on your estate.  Please contact your financial advisor directly or  speak with our development staff.
