Giving 101

Your first step in making a gift to the College of Information Studies is to consider the types of assets you may contribute and the major giving methods.  You may also consult our FAQ, your financial advisors or our development staff.

Types of Assets to Contribute

Cash
This is the simplest gift to make and most flexible for the College of Information Studies to use.  It is usually paid by check, mail order or credit card.

Non-cash assets
Giving non-cash assets leaves your cash flow intact and can provide long term financial planning benefits and tax savings.   Typical assets include:

  • Securities
  • Closely Held Stock
  • Retirement Plan Assets
  •  Life Insurance
  •  Real Estate

Please contact your financial planner to discuss which option suits your needs

Including Us in Your Estate Plan

Since our founding in 1856, The University of Maryland at College Park has gratefully benefited from the thoughtful bequests of alumni, faculty and staff and friends.

Here is our suggested bequest language:

“ I give, devise and bequeath to the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, a tax-exempt organization, located at 2119 Main Administration Building, College Park, MD 20742, (state percentage of estate, or residue or sum of money, or otherwise describe property) to support its general (or state specific) purposes.”

(If your bequest will support an endowed fund at the University of Maryland and if a Memorandum of Understanding is in place, regarding that fund, we ask that the following language be added “…to be administered under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding on file with the Foundation and the University.”)

Recognizing Your Gift During Your Lifetime
We are grateful to all donors who chose to support us through planned gifts and express our appreciation on an ongoing basis to them.  However, under some conditions, it is possible to recognize some of these gifts during the Great Expectations campaign.  This can be discussed with the Development Officer.
