 Audio Recording

My research includes interviewing a number of people. What may I use to record the interviews?

iSchool students have access to a digital recorder or analog recorders for course-related projects and research for a specified period of time. To request use of a recorder, ask the instructor of your research/course work to reserve a recorder on your behalf.

 Card Access

How do I get a UMID card?

UMID cards are issued by the Registrar’s office in the Mitchell Building.

 Labs

How do I access the iSchool computer lab and the student project room?

The student lab and the student project room are open for use during the semester, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If the lab door is closed during these hours, check the sign outside the door to see if the lab has been reserved for a class. If not, contact any instructor or member of the staff for access to the lab. Access to the project room must be reserved in advance; access will be provided by the staff in the dean’s office when the room is reserved.

When may I use the iSchool computer lab?

The student computer lab is available for student use during regular hours whenever it is not reserved for class use. The lab is located in room 2108. Regular open lab hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to noon.


 Laptops

Do I need a laptop for my classes at the iSchool?

Some courses include individual online searching, online exercises, or in-class development work. Check the syllabus and talk with your instructors to learn if access to a laptop will be required in the classroom for your course. Courses that typically require a laptop include INFM603, INFM708, and LBSC690. The College does not lend laptops to students. However, an instructor may request laptops to be used in a specific class.

I don’t have a laptop. How may I complete my course assignments?

School students may use the computers in the iSchool lab to work on projects and complete assignments. Be sure to save your work to a flash drive or online storage location. Documents should not be saved to the computers in the lab. The College does not lend laptops to students.

I will be collecting large quantities of data for my research. What software is available through the iSchool to assist in analyzing this data?

For qualitative data analysis, the iSchool Technology Office provides a limited number of individual annual licenses for NVIVO. Use of these licenses is for a specified period of time and must be approved by a sponsoring instructor. To request use of a license, ask the sponsoring instructor of your research to reserve a license on your behalf.

The College also has a number of licenses for the predictive analytic software PASW –( formerly SPSS) installed in the student lab. Check the announcement board in the lab to determine which lab computers have PASW installed or click here for an online version.

  Podcasting

I would like to create a podcast for my project. What equipment is available for creating a podcast?

iSchool students have access to microphones and audio editing software through the ischool computer lab. The lab also includes a small number of Apple computers with built-in podcasting capabilities. See the IT Support Associate in room 2108D for assistance. You may also ask your instructor to reserve the equipment on your behalf.


 Presentation Practice

Where can my group meet to practice our presentation?

Students can meet in room 2124 to practice presentations, work on group projects, or meet in small groups. The room must be reserved in advance. Access is restricted to currently enrolled iSchool students. Click here for the online reservation form.


 Printing

Where may I print my paper for class?

iSchool students have access to printing in two locations on the second floor (computer lab and open research space in room 2117) and one location on the fourth floor (the lounge). Students must provide their own paper.

 Surveys

I would like to do a large online survey. What survey tools are available to collect my survey data?

There a numerous options and the best choice is dependent on the number and type of survey questions, the number of anticipated responders, and your preferred method of analyzing responses. Free online options include SURVEY MONKEY and GOOGLE Doc’s survey tool. iSchool students also have access to the professional version of Survey Monkey which includes unlimited responses and other advanced features. To request use of the survey, ask the sponsoring instructor of your research to reserve the survey space on your behalf.

 Video Recording

I would like to include video in my presentation. Does the college have video equipment for temporary use?

iSchool students have access to a video camera for course-related projects and research. To request use of the recorder, ask the instructor of your research/course work to reserve the recorder on your behalf.
