Summer 2006

The Post’s Unsung Sleuths, by Deborah Howell

This column by Post ombudsman in the issue of Sunday, July 2, 2006 (p. B6)
praises the work of several of the staff librarians and researchers at the Washington Post.  At least three persons mentioned and one other are MLS graduates of the College of Information Studies.  Of Alice (Rabinovitz) Crites, MLS 1990 it is said that “She often finds the key to the story.”  Madonna Lebling, MLS 2000, maintains “Faces of the Fallen,” a database of soldiers who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Margaret S. (Meg) Smith, MLS 2001, helped with a story on Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl ‘wardrobe malfunction,’ in which Meg was asked to “find out if, ounce for ounce, the FCC fine had made Janet Jackson’s breast the most costly thing on Earth….Turns out emeralds are still more expensive than Janet’s silicone.”

When Meg Smith was contacted by Dr. Eileen Abels, Meg said that another staff research is Magda Jean-Louis, MLS 1997.

Congratulations to these outstanding graduates for helping to keep the Washington Post accurate and informative!
