Safe Family LogoIn this free webinar, we will share resources developed as part of a four-year IMLS grant on the privacy and security challenges faced by public library staff and the families they serve. We’ve created a set of resources for staff that covers training materials to help staff consider and respond to patron privacy needs; teaching moments that library staff can use in everyday staff-patron interactions; and a privacy policy framework to provide guidance on data privacy policies libraries may want to adopt. We will also unveil a set of resources that library staff can use to facilitate programs at the library and children can use/play at home, including a card game that teaches players about strong passwords, a digital escape room for elementary-aged children to learn about privacy concepts, a choose-your-own-adventure story for middle school-aged children that covers social media and location data, and coloring pages that come with privacy conversation prompts parents can use to begin privacy conversations with their young children. During the webinar, we’ll review the materials we’ve developed, talk about future directions for work in this space, and answer questions from attendees.

Speakers: Drs. Jessica Vitak & Mega Subramaniam, College of Information Studies, University of Maryland
