Q: Are there any minors offered through this program?
Answer: No.

Q: What grade is required for benchmark, major, and specialization courses?

Changing Your Major

Q: How can I change my major to InfoSci?
Answer: Changing your major is a mandatory two-step process. Visit Declare InfoSci Major.

Transferring

Q: I am transferring from a Maryland community college and would like to know the process for applying to UMD.
Answer: Great, we look forward to having you as an InfoSci student! To transfer to the University of Maryland, please visit the Pre-Transfer Advising website, which will provide you with the required information on the transfer process for undergraduate students. You will also want to check out The Articulation System for Maryland Colleges and Universities (ARTSYS), which is specifically intended to help students transferring from Maryland community colleges to the University of Maryland.

Curriculum & Program Length

Q: I want to select a major elective course that has already received approval. Do I still need to submit a major elective proposal form?
Answer: Yes. Every student is required to submit the InfoSci Upper Level Major Electives Proposal form regardless if the course is on the approved menu. Select the approved course, complete the form, and submit your proposal.

Q: Can I take benchmark courses and major electives in the same semester?
Answer: No. Please visit the Academic Policies in Info Science Major page of the iSchool website for guidance.

Q: Can I take benchmark courses and Core courses in the same semester?
Answer: Benchmark courses must be completed successfully before the student starts taking Core courses. The only exception to this is a single “overlap” semester when the student can take their last benchmarks and first Core courses.

Q: I recently changed my major to Information Science and trying to complete all degree requirements in a timely manner. How many semesters will it take for me to graduate?
Answer: The InfoSci program requires successful completion of 10 Core courses and five Major electives. Many of our courses are sequence-based; (that is, you must complete a course before starting the next course, which has the former course as its prerequisite). Considering the number of courses required, and the sequence in which they must be taken, the vast majority of InfoSci students will need four or more regular semesters to complete the program.

Current Students - Taking Courses at other Colleges/Universities

Q: I am a current student in the major and would like to take a course in another department/college and count it towards the major electives requirement.
Answer: You will need to submit a InfoSci Upper Level Major Electives Proposal form for major electives. The course must be approved for you to count as a major elective before you enroll the course.

Q: I want to take a benchmark course, or an InfoSci core course at another institution. Is this allowed in the major?
Answer: No. Please visit the Academic Policies in Info Science Major page of the iSchool website for guidance.

Q: I want to take a summer or winter course at another institution. What is the process?
Answer: If you wish to take a course at another institution over the summer or winter you must speak to the InfoSci advisor, verify the course can transfer through the Transfer Course Database, and complete a Permission to Enroll form (use "College of Information Studies" form). Read the Academic Policies in Info Science Major page to make sure you understand which courses you can take at another institution.

Non-Students - Taking an InfoSci Course

Q: My major is not Information Science, but I would like to take a course in the Information Science major (INST). What is the process?
Answer: You can request to enroll in an INST course by filling out this form. Submitting this does NOT guarantee permission to enroll. Permission may be granted pending the availability of seats in the course, and students will be required to wait until at least the first day of classes before receiving a response.

Careers

Q: What are some career paths for graduates of the program?
Answer: See our Career Resources page.
